Hewlett-Packard uses fingerprint scanners on certain model laptops as a security measure. The fingerprint scanner requires a user to scan one of the fingers as well as input a password to access a locked laptop or to boot up the operating system on a laptop that has been turned off. The idea behind the fingerprint scanner is that nobody other than the laptop’s owner can access the computer, since the owner’s fingerprint is unique
(1) Click on the “Start” button on Windows, then “Programs,” and select “HP Protect Tools Security Manager.” When the Security Manager window appears, select “Credential Manager” on the left side of the window.
(2) Select “My Identity” and then “Register Fingerprints” in the Credential Manager window.
(3) Scan your finger as prompted by the security software. You may have to scan more than once, which the program will prompt you to do. You will also need to select a password for your computer, if you have already not done so. Make sure to pick a password you will not easily forget.
(4) Restart Windows by clicking on the “Start” button and then “Restart.” When the Windows welcome screen comes up, scan your finger and input the password you chose. You will need to do this each time you log onto the computer.
